Fire Service partnership to save lives
An innovative sprinkler system installed in a women's refuge in Bedfordshire
is the first in a programme that could save lives.
Bedfordshire and Luton Fire and Rescue Service (BLFRS) have been carrying
out free home fire safety checks that have identified vulnerable people who
are at risk of fire in their homes.
The very young, the elderly, those who have limited mobility or are disabled
are most at risk from fire in their homes. They are often unable to make a
safe escape even if they hear a smoke alarm. Sprinkler systems could close
this gap in life protection and, together with smoke alarms, offer people
protection against fire. A smoke alarm gives a warning but a sprinkler
system starts to put the fire out immediately.
Working in partnership with South Beds District Council and suppliers
Aqua-Mist Fire Protection Ltd, BLFRS have put together a package of
sprinkler installation to protect the most vulnerable in the county.
|
The system uses unique technology that sprays fine mist when activated. It
puts out fires fast, using minimum amounts of water and ultimately saving
lives.
Simon Barker, BLFRS Area Commander, said:
"This is a great example of partnership working between BLFRS, South Beds
District Council and supplier Aqua-Mist. This innovative product uses spray
to extinguish fire in high risk premises where people have much more risk of
death from fire. We look forward to more partnerships arrangements such as
this in the future."
Eric Cranswick, Chairman of Aqua-Mist and inventor of the system says:
"Working with the Fire Service to protect vulnerable people is a big driver
for me professionally. I have worked closely in partnerships with Fire
Services throughout Great Britain and we are now looking for that close
working relationship with Bedfordshire and Luton Fire and Rescue Service.
I like the way BLFRS take on new technology - they are very open to new
ideas.
Smoke alarms offer a 47% chance of saving lives but our system gives a 97%
chance. It is all about saving lives"
Peter Hailes, Building Surveyor for South Beds District Council has worked
closely with BLFRS on this programme. He has also been a Retained
Firefighter at Leighton Buzzard Fire Station since 1983 and understands the
devastation fire can cause. He said:
"I can see straight away as a Firefighter how effective sprinkler systems
are from a practical point of view. The first property to have the
Aqua-Mist system will be a women's refuge providing a safer home for
vulnerable women and children."
This is part of a programme of activity carried out by BLFRS's Community
Fire Safety team that has included:
3,788 home fire safety checks (2006/7)
2,834 smoke alarms fitted (2006/7)
Funding is from capital grants under the government's "Home Fire Risk Check
Initiative" from ODPM.
Growth and Investment
Continued Sucsess and Investment!!
The continued growth and success of Aqua-Mist Fire
Protection although welcomed has lead to an investment drive to meet our clients
needs. In the early part of 2008, the company invested heavily in its
manufacturing facility with the acquisition of several state of the art CNC
machines.
|
In particular the installation of a multi-axis turning centre, which now sets
the mile stone for water mist production. The brand new edition gives the
ability to generate components throughout the night and over the weekend,
adding capacity without increasing overheads.
The increase in capacity positions Aqua-Mist Fire Protection to be able to cope
with ever increasing demands for its award winning LP2000 Low Pressure Water
Mist System.

The History of the Games.
The World Firefighters Games was initiated by an American entrepreneur and a committee of international firelighters, whose coming together led to the 1st World Firefighters Games in Auckland New Zealand in 1990. This inaugural event was hailed as a great success placing the WFG firmly on the international map, attracting thousands of athletes and their families from all over the world.
The second WFG were held in Las Vegas in 1992 and thus the stage was set to host this event on a biennial basis. 1994 saw the ownership of the event passing to a committee of firelighters in Perth, Western Australia who hosted yet another fantastic WFG in this same year. The W. Australia WFG Governing Body have continued to drive forward this event which has seen the mantle of the games being hosted at the following international venues: 1996 - Edmonton, Canada, 1998 - Durban, South Africa, 2000 - Mantes, France, 2002 - Christchurch, New Zealand, 2004 - Sheffield, England, 2006 - Hong Kong, China.

Dublin Hotel Refurbishment
Aqua-Mists low pressure water mist system has been selected to provide fire suppression to a 300 bed hotel in Dublin. The project is a refurbishment and is being completed in 10 phases to ensure the hotel can remain operational during the revamp. All areas of the hotel are being protected including the 200+ space underground car park.
The project being a retro installation has brought many obstacles and we have overcome these issues coupled with being an international project successfully to date, with all aspects of the project being handed back to the client on time.
One item of our installation which has gained particular praise has been our ability to offsite manufacture the water supplies skid, this being a further demonstration of our unique placement in the market place.

Industrial Oil Fryer Test
Having been approached by a world renowned brand of frozen food manufactures, Aqua-Mist fire Protection successfully demonstrated the effectiveness of its LP2000 water mist system. The test was monitored by the BSi (British Standards Institute) and was undertaken to prove its superior ability at the control and extinguishment of deep fat oil fires. However this fat fryer was no ordinary fat fryer, in fact on a industrial level, over 2000 lts of oil and batter was used and on both tests the LP2000 achieved the pass criteria as laid out by the client and the clients insurer. The test was further of interest as the fryer enclosure was constructed out of sandwich steel boards.
